I am so excited to continue to explore Empathy this week through enhancing understandings of Social Awareness. By showing care and kindness for each other we foster empathy. If we treat each other with kindness we contributing to a more empathetic society. Children can show that they care for their families and community by giving 'Random Acts of Kindness'. Spend time with your child talking about different ways we can be kind to each other at school and at home. Create a list of ways to be kind at home/school and then make a calendar of acts to complete in a month. Watch your child grow empathy and document successes. Your child can also participate in a 'Happy Heart Hunt' project. Click on the picture below to explore this project. You can download 'The Great Kindness challenge' family check list. This is the list of ideas to promote 'acts of kindness'. Help you child grow empathy by taking a kind action. Assignment 1 As a class we are going to create our own gift cards to donate them to our school community. You can explore the project ideas for building kindness by checking the link below. https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas Here is the link to check out the idea of creating the gift card. https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas/883-give-a-gift-card Get creative! Think about a person you would like to give a card. Think about supportive message you would like to deliver. Make up a sentence or two. Create a drawing to go with your message. Drop your card off at school. Enjoy the process! Continue to read daily with your child for at least 10-15 minutes with the focus on reading strategies covered over the year. Talk about the characters, topics of interest, discuss why you child likes/doesn`t like a certain character, etc. Other fun activities can include: -Share rhymes, poems and songs. Encourage your child to join in. -Share and talk about family histories and family photos. -Look at picture books or art books. Ask your child to describe what is happening in the pictures and make up stories together. -Collect cardboard and other household items for your child to build with. Ask your child to describe what they are building. -Look at ‘junk mail’ and talk about the things for sale. -Listen to simple radio programs or podcasts together and discuss the content. -Play vocabulary games with your child such as, “what’s the opposite of ….?” (for example, “what’s the opposite of big?”) and “what’s another word for….?” (for example, “what’s another word for angry?”). Oral storytelling Storytelling is a great way to extend your child’s speaking and listening skills, and to expand their memory and imagination. Either you can tell the story, or you can encourage your child to tell the story. Storytelling might be about: -your child’s favourite toy -another family member -a pet -a favourite fictional character from a book or television program -a famous person -the work of people from different professions, such as astronauts, firefighters, nurses and teachers -an imaginary world with imaginary characters » an imaginary animal that can speak. Here are some tips to start your storytelling: -Make it exciting, with different voices, puppets, or a finger play. -Have a dress-up box for your child to use for storytelling and imaginative play. -Start with what interests your child. -Start by creating a character and a setting. Numeracy Continue with daily numeracy through counting everyday. You can incorporate counting into everyday activities such as: -Cut fruit into six pieces and ask your child to count the pieces. -Count the pieces of toast you cooked at breakfast. -Add the total number of cutlery items at the table. -Count the number of people travelling in the car or on the bus. -Count the number of houses as you walk along the street. -Count how many steps it takes to walk from the kitchen to the bathroom. -Practise counting when grocery shopping with your child (for example, counting the number of apples you put into the bag). -Encourage your child to talk about the number of things in the pictures they draw. Hunting for numbers Number hunts are a fun and engaging activity for your child. Ask your child to find numbers around you. Look at and say the numbers on car number plates, signs, calendars, newspapers, shopping catalogues, speed signs, and houses. Using playing cards Playing with cards is always a fun activity, particularly on a rainy day or on holidays. You can: » Play matching number games like ‘Snap’ with playing cards. » Order the numbers on the cards from smallest to largest, or largest to smallest. Playing shop Playing shop helps ground your child’s maths learning in the real world while also developing their social skills. One way to play shop is to create a mini-shop at home. Here are a few tips and activities: -Collect food and grocery items and label them with prices written on sticky notes, or prices cut out of shopping catalogues. -Talk about how we pay for items using coins, notes and cards. -Make paper money or use play money to buy and sell goods from the mini-shop. -Collect old receipts or price tags and use them in the minishop. -Notice the features of different coins, including their shapes and the animals and people shown. Discuss the differences. Create coin rubbings with pencils and paper. -Encourage your child to order food items by height (tallest to the shortest) or by cost (least expensive to most expensive). -Introduce kitchen scales to the mini-shop to weigh foods, such as a box of tea bags or a bag of rice, and order items by weight. Assignment 1 Review counting on numbers 0-30. Fill in the missing numbers. Assignment 2 Use a number line to practice adding numbers 1-10 Assignment 3 What comes after a certain number? Improve your number count. Enjoy your week and send me more photos of your child`s activities!

With the shift to the re-introduction of in-class instruction - online learning will reflect classroom opportunities with a focus on project based inquiry and experiences for more in-depth exploration. For journals - please feel free to write about your own topic and/or ones you haven't completed in past learning activities. We will continue with math and literacy lessons. Literacy We are continuing our adventure of exploring empathy. Our goal for this week is to develop an understanding of that friendship, caring, sharing, fairness, equality and love are important in building positive relationships. 'I' statement for children for this week is the following 'when I develop and value relationships, I care and show respect for myself and others'. By developing a sense of empathy children are learning to be leaders, thinkers, and to be socially responsible. To lead effectively, you yourself must model empathy with the children under your guidance. They, in turn, will practice empathy in their own moments of leadership. Hopefully, they will adopt the trait for use in future relationships as well. Assignment 1 Please watch this video with your child and ask your child these questions below. At the end of this discussion children will be able to better understand what it means to be a good friend and also what it means to be happy, healthy and safe. Questions before viewing the video What is the boy doing on the front cover? How do you think he feels? How do you know? Look at the boy on the front cover and look at the boy on the back, what’s different? While watching a video, please, pause and reflect. What do you notice about Brian, the invisible boy? At recess (playtime) what happens to Brian? How do you think he feels? What words do the children use that make Brian feel sad? When the new boy arrives at school, what can you see happening to the picture of Brian? Why do you think he has a little bit of colour on his face? What’s different about Brian’s face from all the other children on this page? What do the children do at lunchtime when they see what the new boy, Justin, is eating? How do you think this makes Justin feel? How does Brian try to help Justin and make him feel welcome? At playtime the next day, what words does Justin use to make Brian smile? What do you notice happening to the picture of Brian when Justin says these words? Back in class, what does Emilio say to Brian when the teacher says they need to find a partner? What do you notice about the picture of Brian when Emilio says these words? After viewing the video Share: At the start of the story Brian was alone with no friends; he felt that nobody could see him. He felt invisible. When Justin joins the school Brian finds friendship. Brian starts to feel visible when he has friends. He feels happy at the end of the story as he now has friends and is included. Children to share what makes them happy about being in the class. Writing assignment We are going to create our classroom Kindness Tree. Your child can contribute by drawing something they could do to make a difference to the people in their class/school, home and also writing about it. You can use the prompts below I can make the difference by... I can show empathy by... I am a great friend when... Math As we approach beach season the opportunities for the outdoor learning is becoming more reach. Children are eager to explore the seashore or a lake in search of summer treasures. Luckily, we are prepared to boost their math skills right there on sight. Check this article to help your child to discover fun ways to do simple math exercises on the sand and in the sea. 10 Ways to Practice Math at the Beach-click the picture below to explore This week in Math we will focus on review of the previous learnt content. We will revise the following concept -counting money Assignment 1 How many quarters do you need to buy this ice cream? This ice cream is worth 50 cents. How many dimes will you need to buy this lollipop? This lollipop is worth 70 cents. How many nickels do you need to buy this bag of popcorn? This beg of popcorn is worth 25 cents. EMPATHY PROJECT Dear Parents, I am so excited to let you know that we are starting a new unit on Empathy. During June we will be discussing what empathy means and how we show empathy around us. Our lessons will include discussions about our uniqueness, differences and how to understand them. Empathy is an ability to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. It improves everyday interactions with people and especially appreciated in difficult times like we experience nowadays with COVID-19. Some children are born compassionate, others need a great chunk of time to develop this skill. We are living in an interconnected world where children come into contact with many people, learning such important skills as collaboration, communication, critical thinking, etc. Ego-centrism is a characteristic that prevails with children below the age of 7-8 years. That means children do not yet understand that someone could mean something different from what he/she understands. Being able to truly step into somebody else`s shoes will show us that we all have something in common and bring people closer in caring for each other way. That means we can improve relationships with others, becoming more connected to them. This also helps us to develop and deepen our knowledge about the world. How can we teach empathy at home and also at schools? We can model empathy to our children by showing
At home, please, discuss empathy with your child. Some questions you may want to include -What is empathy? What does it mean to you? -Has someone ever helped you when you were struggling? -Can you be friend with someone who is different than you? -When this happened (example) how do you thing he/she felt? Watch one or two videos about empathy by pushing the button below and have a discussion with your child about what empathy means to you. One of the best ways to teach about Empathy is to volunteer with your family in the community. Below is the link to 35 service projects for children that develop Empathy. Some of them are the ideas that we have been working on from the beginning of the year in our school. For example, we had senior children to come to our class and read stories to share their talent with younger children. Our class has also put on gloves and picked up litter around the school. Children also made their gifts for winter potluck and welcomed guests to our school. Look through the ideas below, discuss them with your child and see if anything sparks an interest in your child. You can start with a simple idea of planting a plant in your garden or selecting gently used items for donations. Literacy Assignment 1 Read "I am a Human" a book of Empathy by Susan Verde and answer the questions below (Epic books). -What does it mean to be a human being? -Does it mean you will always know what to do? -Does it mean you will always make the right choice? -Always be happy? Turns out that each of us along with our billions of fellow humans will make a mistake now and then. We can learn to share love and kindness even after we have said unkind words. https://www.getepic.com/app/read/59868 Assignment 2 One of my favourite stories that helps children to explore their own identity is the story written by Francie Dillon 'A Red Crayon'. This story helps children to understand the idea that we all special and each of us is unique in its own way. Questions to ask During Reading - At the beginning of the story no one noticed that Red was blue. I wonder why everyone expects Red to draw red things… Look at the page that says: “Everyone seemed to have something to say.” I wonder how Red felt when everyone was talking about him… Red meets someone who makes him feel special. What does Berry do to make Red feel that he can be himself? Special friends make you happy to be who you are. Tell us about a friend you like to be with and what makes them a special friend to you. After reading Think about your Super-Powers (what you’re good at) and create a drawing of what makes you special and unique. Share your Super-Powers with others and create a display. Writing activity Please use one of the following prompts below and complete the sentence My super power is.... I am good at...because... I am unique because.... I am special because.... Math Inequalities In most math problems you are trying to find the exact answer. We use the equal sign "=" to say that two things are the same. For example 2=2, 3=3. However, sometimes we just want to show that something is bigger or smaller than something else. Or maybe we just want to say that two things are not equal. These cases are called inequalities. Special Signs There are special signs used with inequalities to indicate which side is bigger, which side is smaller, or that the two sides aren't equal. Here are three major inequality signs: < less than >greater than ≠ not equal If you need to remember which way the greater than or less than sign should point, you can remember it this way. Think of the sign as an alligator's mouth. The alligator wants to eat the larger side. Like this: Sing along songs are below. Assignment 1 Place one of the signs co compare numbers < less than >greater than ≠ not equal Enjoy your week!

Special Announcement for Earth Day Dear Families, If you remember in Early Spring students from Cultural Journeys went on a Field Trip to Nexen Beach. We were preparing for a special occasion to host Harriet the Herring in the waters of Howe Sound! Children made special cedar racks for harvesting Herring Roe and then watched the racks being taken by boat to the ocean. In late March, Harriet the Herring has arrived to Howe Sound with her extended family members and laid eggs on the racks. The video of Howe Sound Herring Roe harvest was just recently made and now released on youtube for Earth Day! We are so lucky to be working with such a great team of educators at Cultural Journeys. Thank you Matthew and Charlene for your amazing work and teachings! Think about what we can do to keep Howe Sound clean so Harriet the Herring keeps coming back to lay eggs? Continue my sentence We can help to keep Howe Sound clean by... Talk soon.
Enjoy you day! |
